the history of springtown
Named after a natural spring, the source of Flint Creek, Springtown has maintained a steady population of around 100 since its incorporation in 1909. By 1889, the town was thriving with a grocery and hardware store, a drugstore, a hotel, a steam-powered grist mill and sawmill, two blacksmith shops, two shoemakers, three doctors, and three churches.
During the 1880s, Springtown was considered a boomtown, but its growth stalled when the Kansas City Southern Railroad was constructed three miles to the west. Many businesses and residents moved to what became the community of Orchard, now known as the city of Gentry. However, around 1900, Springtown saw the construction of a larger steam mill, bringing renewed activity.
Unfortunately, on October 16, 1908, the community suffered significant damage from a fire. The following year, in 1909, Springtown officially incorporated as a town.
